A modern vehicle can contain dozens of networked modules controlling restraints, braking, steering, powertrain, cameras, radar, parking assistance, lighting, doors, climate, battery systems, and convenience features. Collision damage or repair disassembly can affect those systems without leaving an obvious broken part. Pre-repair and post-repair scans create two different snapshots that help the repair team plan, diagnose, verify, and document the work.
Why collision repair needs two diagnostic snapshots
One scan cannot answer both “what condition arrived?” and “what condition remains after repair?” If the shop scans only at the end, it may be difficult to distinguish a preexisting fault from something related to the crash or repair. If it scans only at the beginning, it cannot verify that modules communicate and relevant faults have been addressed after the vehicle is reassembled.
The two reports support different decisions. The pre-scan informs the repair plan, technician assignments, OEM research, supplement, and calibration strategy. The post-scan informs final diagnosis, quality control, documentation, and customer discussion.
Requirements vary among manufacturers. Some automakers publish broad scanning position statements; others embed scan or diagnostic operations within individual service and collision procedures. The repair facility should use current information for the VIN and work being performed, not a single shop rule applied identically to every vehicle.
What happens during a pre-repair scan
- Identify the vehicle. Confirm VIN, model, model year, mileage, options, powertrain, and relevant software or build information.
- Screen for hazards. Address unstable high-voltage, fuel, restraint, fire, or structural conditions before connecting equipment or powering systems.
- Scan all accessible modules. Record codes, communication failures, alerts, and system status using the platform required for the vehicle.
- Preserve the report. Save the date, mileage, VIN, tool, module list, code status, and any limitations caused by damage or loss of power.
- Interpret the findings. Compare faults with the accident direction, visible damage, owner concerns, prior condition, and OEM diagnostic steps.
- Update the repair plan. Add physical diagnosis, wiring checks, component inspections, programming, calibration, or specialist work where supported.
A long code list is not automatically a long list of broken parts. Low voltage, disconnections, network interruption, previous maintenance, and the collision can all produce different fault patterns.
A diagnostic trouble code is evidence—not a diagnosis
A code can tell a technician that a module detected an unexpected condition. It may identify a circuit, communication path, sensor signal, deployment event, calibration status, temperature, voltage, or other category. It usually does not prove which component failed or why.
For example, a camera-related code could result from a damaged camera, moved bracket, blocked view, broken wire, connector issue, lost power, software state, removed windshield, or incomplete calibration. An airbag code could point to a deployment, damaged harness, impact sensor, pretensioner, connector, or restraint control issue. Diagnosis follows the OEM test path and physical evidence.
Codes should not be erased simply to make the warning light disappear. The repair team records them, resolves accident- and repair-related causes, documents unrelated conditions, and clears faults only as the procedure allows.
How diagnostic information guides the repair
Scan results can change who works on the vehicle and when. A noncommunicating restraint module may need attention before interior disassembly. A high-voltage isolation concern may pause ordinary body handling. A steering or suspension fault can reinforce the need for measurement and alignment. Camera or radar faults can affect parts decisions and calibration planning.
Repair steps can also create expected temporary codes as bumpers, lamps, doors, seats, sensors, batteries, and modules are disconnected. Technicians track those changes so expected disassembly faults do not hide an unrelated problem.
When replacement modules are installed, they may require configuration, software, pairing, initialization, or relearn procedures. The work sequence matters: completing a final scan before these operations would produce an incomplete picture.
What happens during the post-repair scan
The post-repair scan comes near the end of the quality-control process, after the vehicle has been reassembled and the required mechanical and electronic operations are completed. The technician verifies module communication, reviews current and history codes, and compares the results with the pre-repair report.
- Confirm repaired and replaced systems communicate correctly.
- Identify missed connectors, damaged wiring, incorrect configuration, or unresolved faults.
- Complete OEM-directed self-tests, relearns, programming, or drive cycles.
- Confirm required calibrations and alignments have separate passing documentation.
- Diagnose relevant remaining faults rather than repeatedly clearing them.
- Record unrelated or preexisting conditions for customer discussion.
A report that says no codes were found is useful only when it identifies the vehicle, date, modules scanned, equipment, and scan limitations. It is not a substitute for the rest of the repair file.
Scans do not replace calibration, alignment, or inspection
A module may communicate normally while its camera or radar is physically misaligned. A sensor bracket can be bent without setting an immediate code. A wheel alignment value, structural dimension, battery enclosure dent, coolant leak, loose ground, incorrect fastener, or poorly routed harness may not appear in a scan report.
That is why the complete collision process can include:
- Visual inspection and authorized teardown.
- Structural and suspension measurements.
- Wheel alignment and tire evaluation.
- High-voltage, battery, cooling, leak, or isolation tests.
- Static or dynamic ADAS calibration.
- Programming, configuration, initialization, and relearns.
- Function checks, road test when appropriate, water test, and final quality review.
Each record answers a different question. No single printout certifies the entire vehicle.
Why scans appear as separate estimate operations
Scanning requires equipment access, subscriptions, vehicle setup, report handling, and technician time. Diagnostic labor may be separate because reading the report is not the same as tracing a circuit, testing a component, researching an OEM procedure, or confirming a repair.
An insurance estimate may not show these items initially, especially when it is written from photographs. The shop documents the manufacturer requirement, relevant damage, pre-scan findings, diagnostic work, and post-scan result in a supplement. Coverage and payment depend on the policy and claim review.
Owners should ask whether the estimate includes both scan stages, who performs them, whether factory or approved equipment is required, and which reports will be provided at delivery. Avoid choosing between estimates by total alone without comparing the diagnostic scope.

- Diagnostic notes. Findings and repairs connected to relevant accident- or repair-related faults.

- Programming or sublet invoices. Documentation of specialist operations coordinated outside the body department.
- Unrelated-condition explanation. Any preexisting or non-collision issue that remains should be disclosed clearly.
