A Tesla that powers on and moves under its own power is not automatically safe to drive after a collision. The touchscreen may not report a damaged tire sidewall, bent suspension link, loose bumper, compromised closure, shifted sensor bracket, distorted structure, or every battery-enclosure condition. The safest choice depends on the impact location, symptoms, visible damage, warning messages, and a qualified physical evaluation.
Why “minor accident” is not a mechanical diagnosis
Drivers often call a collision minor when airbags did not deploy, the car still moves, and the paint damage is small. Those facts describe the visible outcome, not the condition of every system behind it. Flexible bumper fascias, underbody panels, wheels, tires, and suspension can hide significant damage.
A low-speed curb strike can damage a tire, wheel, alignment, steering, suspension, or battery shield. A parking-lot bumper impact can break a sensor bracket, beam mount, lamp tab, or closure reference. A rear impact can transmit force through a hitch or cast structure.
Use symptoms and inspection—not the size of the scratch—to decide whether driving is appropriate. When the impact path or condition is uncertain, transport is the safer default.
High-voltage and battery signs mean do not drive or charge
Move people away from the vehicle and call 911 if you see smoke, sparks, flame, or increasing heat, or hear hissing, popping, crackling, gurgling, or bubbling near the battery. A strong unfamiliar chemical odor, leaking fluid, exposed orange cable, or a penetrated battery enclosure also requires immediate caution.
Do not drive or charge when the touchscreen reports battery, high-voltage isolation, charging, thermal-system, or serious electrical faults after the impact. The absence of an alert does not rule out physical damage, especially after an underbody, rocker, floor, charge-port, or severe rear collision.
NHTSA notes that physical high-voltage battery damage can create immediate or delayed hazards. Do not touch components, open the pack, attempt a DIY disconnect, or park a severely damaged EV inside a home garage while its condition is unknown.
Tires, wheels, steering, and brakes can make a drivable Tesla unsafe
Tesla owner guidance warns not to drive with a damaged or incorrectly inflated tire. After a collision, inspect from a safe standing position for cuts, bulges, exposed cord, rapid pressure loss, cracked wheels, a tire contacting bodywork, or a wheel that no longer sits square in the opening.
Arrange a tow for new pulling, off-center or binding steering, vibration, grinding, scraping, severe alignment change, abnormal ride height, soft or changed braking, brake warnings, or fluid near a wheel. Do not test-drive the vehicle to “see if it clears up.”
Suspension and steering components can be bent without dramatic exterior damage. Alignment is a measurement step after component and structural inspection, not a substitute for those checks.
Airbags, seat belts, and impact sensors need attention
Do not continue driving with deployed airbags or pretensioners, an airbag or restraint warning, a damaged seat belt, loose seat, or damaged occupant-area structure. Restraint components are designed around specific mounting and electronic conditions.
Tesla states that seat belts worn in a collision must be inspected or replaced by Tesla or a qualified repair facility even when damage is not obvious. Tesla service information also calls for inspection of impact sensors near the collision area and harnesses connected to deployed or damaged components.
No deployment does not mean no inspection. The impact may have remained below a deployment threshold while still damaging a sensor, connector, belt, seat, or surrounding structure.
Loose body parts, glass, closures, and lamps affect the decision
A bumper corner, wheel liner, underbody shield, hood, trunk, liftgate, door, lamp, or piece of glass can detach or interfere with driving. Do not drive if a hood or liftgate will not latch, a loose panel can contact a tire, broken glass can fall, or required lamps and signals do not work.
Changed gaps or a closure that needs unusual force can indicate movement at hinges, latch references, opening structure, or nearby panels. Adjusting the latch at the scene does not verify the underlying body condition.
Water, rain, or road spray can enter damaged lamps, connectors, high-voltage areas, or interior electronics. Covering damage with tape is not a technical repair and may hide deterioration from the receiving shop.
Warning messages and driver-assistance limitations matter
Photograph every post-impact message before cycling power or clearing anything. Battery, braking, steering, restraint, tire, suspension, camera, parking, lighting, and driver-assistance alerts can help the shop prepare for the vehicle.
Do not depend on Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, lane features, collision warnings, parking aids, cameras, or automated driving features when the vehicle reports a limitation, awaits calibration, or has damage near a sensor or its mounting. Tesla’s owner guidance emphasizes that driver-assistance features are not substitutes for attentive driving even when operating normally.
A clear camera image does not confirm geometric alignment, and no dashboard warning does not confirm every system is undamaged.
When might a limited drive to a shop be reasonable?
A short drive may be reasonable when the impact is truly superficial, no battery or high-voltage area is involved, no warning message is present, all tires and wheels are sound, steering and brakes feel unchanged, all closures and body parts are secure, restraints and lamps function, no fluid leaks, and a knowledgeable professional has determined the vehicle is appropriate to move.
Even then, avoid highway speeds, long distances, charging stops, poor weather, and reliance on driver-assistance features until the vehicle is inspected. Stop immediately if a warning, odor, heat, vibration, noise, pulling, rubbing, fluid leak, or handling change develops.
This is not remote clearance for an individual vehicle. Photos can help triage damage, but they cannot show every hidden component. If the choice feels uncertain, use proper transport.
How to tow a damaged Tesla correctly
Follow the owner’s manual for the exact Tesla model and configuration. Tesla Model Y transporter guidance requires all four wheels off the ground because spinning wheels can generate power, heat, and damage. Other models have their own current instructions, so do not assume an ordinary two-wheel tow is acceptable.
- Tell the operator it is a Tesla. Provide the model, damage, warnings, key or phone-key status, and wheel condition.
- Use the specified transport and loading points. Incorrect chains, hooks, suspension attachments, or underbody contact can add damage.
- Use transport mode only when appropriate. Follow the touchscreen and manual; do not force a disabled or unstable vehicle.
- Notify the receiving shop. A possibly battery-damaged Tesla should not arrive without warning or an intake plan.
- Document condition and destination. Photograph the vehicle before loading and confirm storage charges and release authorization.
What the collision center checks before routine driving resumes
The facility considers the crash path, scans the vehicle when appropriate, removes parts as authorized, inspects high-voltage and thermal areas, measures structure, checks wheels and suspension, evaluates restraints, verifies closures and lighting, and researches Tesla repair procedures.
